Adopting a MexPup
Rescuing an animal starts with the rescue, then the care of the animal, to bring them back to a healthy state physically. Once they are physically healthy we start on the mental health. Because our rescue dogs have experienced neglect, abuse, suffering, and abandonment, these dogs cannot speak for themselves or choose their future families, we at Mexpup have a huge responsibility in making that decision for them. Our dogs come from unknown backgrounds and we can make no guarantees as to their temperaments, level of training, or health. We ask our adopters to take into consideration that pets require a lifelong commitment. When planning for a new pet, future life changes such as marriage, divorce, relocation, additions to the family, career changes and allergies, must be taken into consideration. We strive to place our dogs into permanent and loving homes.
Our application screening process is thorough, although we pride ourselves on processing applications quickly and efficiently. The adoption fees are used towards saving more lives. All dogs are spayed or neutered and brought up to date on vaccinations prior to adoption. Vet records are provided to the adopters. Please note that our dogs are not adopted on a first come first serve basis, but rather we look for the best possible match. We reserve the right to refuse applications for adoption. Mexpup will not adopt out our pups to homes that have unspayed/unneutered males or females. We are passionate about helping the over population of dogs in this world and promote spaying and neutering through free clinics in Mexico, and educating the public.

Next Steps
Once your application form has been submitted, our adoptions coordinator will call you to conduct a telephone interview, this is usually a 10-15 minute call. Once that's complete, a Mexpup volunteer will contact you to schedule a home visit - a little time to get to know each other. It's a great opportunity for us to learn about you, see where the pup will be living, and it gives us a chance to share with you what we've learned over the years that can help you welcome a new (formerly homeless) puppy into your home.
Meet a MexPup
This is our favorite part of the process! One of MexPup's volunteers will be responsible for approving your application after the home visit. If everything works out and you are approved for adoption, the best part of the process begins. When the dog that you've selected arrives in BC, you will have a chance to meet them and make sure it's a good match. If you, the puppy and the volunteer are all happy with the match, then Felicidades!!! (that's Spanish for Congratulations!!!) You have 14 days to ensure the fit is great, or we take the pup back and reimburse your adoption fee.. We just ask that you foster the pup until we find another foster home. You have completed the very last task involved in rescuing your MexPup! His or her journey started by being found sick, hurt or hungry, and all alone somewhere living on the streets in Mexico. The start of his new life comes when he gets in the car with you on the trip to his new home and you see a pair of trusting eyes looking at you as if to say... Thanks. I needed that.
One Last Thing
We recommend that you enroll your newly adopted friend in appropriate training as early as possible. From the moment you bring a dog home, you can start to work on good manners. Most undesirable behaviors can be modified, so we recommend that you consult a professional trainer and take the time to work with the dog, don't wait until you are frustrated to the point of not wanting to keep your pet. We work with multiple training organizations and will gladly help to arrange a suitable course of action for you. Please visit our Friends Of Mexpup page and check out the trainers we recommend.

MexPup Puerto Vallarta's Vet
Our local hero Vet on the Mexico side, Paco Aguilar has done so much to help us over the years. He, the other Veterinarians, and staff at Sabuesos have been indespensible and we could not do what we do without their help. Almost all of the veterinarian care MexPups receive in Mexico comes from this great group of people and they offer this help to us at such a discount it can't be considered anything less than charitable. So, when you hear that one of our animals has needed additional surgeries or other medical attention which we're seeking help for, keep in mind that our costs here are substantially lower than they would be in Canada or the US.
If you're ever in need of a fantastic vet when you're in Puerto Vallarta, please go see Paco at Sabuesos. He is a great friend to Puerto Vallarta's homeless pups.

Adoption costs
CANADA :
Small breed puppies up to 4 years old - $600
Small breed dogs 4+ years - $550
Medium/ large breed puppies up to 3 years old - $550
Medium large breed dogs 3+ years $500
Senior and disabled $400 - $500 depending on the dog
Dogs taken in locally in BC - $500- $700 depending on costs of vet bills
Fees are subject to change, please refer to the individual dog profile for adoption fee.
We strive at all costs to get your new pet to the closest airport to you, with the available flights we get. It is up to the adoptive families to get their new pet and or donate to Mexpup to send a volunteer over to get your pet. We fly into Victoria and Vancouver, and sometimes to Comox. If you cannot get your new pet, please calculate the cost of the ferry, and a hotel into your donation to MexPup. Every dollar we have is used to help animals.
USA:
Same prices as Canada adoptions. Conversion rates do not apply as the cost to fly into the US is higher than flying with flight angels into BC
If you adopt locally in Puerto Vallarta, the fee will depend on the individual dog. We simply need assistance in covering the normal medical expenses, so the amount is handled on a case-by-case basis.
